Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta speaks during virtually convened meeting of the AU on the status of the Ethiopia-Tigray peace agreement on December 1, 2023

Belgut Member of Parliament (MP) Nelson Koech criticized ex-president Uhuru Kenyatta’s funding demands. Koech stated that Kenyatta is sensationalizing the matter.

Kenyatta’s Allegations

Former President Kenyatta, through his spokesperson Kanze Dena, declared that his office has been deprived of its rightful packages. He claims to have footed bills that the state should have covered.

Koech’s Rebuttal

In response, MP Koech labeled Kenyatta’s remarks as a political stunt, urging him to address the issue through appropriate channels. Despite Kenyatta’s assertion that the state has turned a deaf ear to his demands, Koech maintains that the former president is sensationalizing the matter.

Political Maneuvering

Koech criticized Kenyatta’s demand for pension, arguing it goes against the civil servants’ code of conduct. He pointed out that other beneficiaries of similar schemes, like Moody Awori, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Raila Odinga, have not lodged complaints.

Economic Sensitivity

The legislator emphasized the insensitivity of Kenyatta’s demands amid an economic downturn. He questioned the necessity of a substantial budgetary allocation for Kenyatta’s office while the nation grapples with financial challenges.

Kenyatta’s Claims

Kenyatta’s office alleges that the state owes them over Ksh.1 billion for the past two years, highlighting significant discrepancies in budgetary allocations and actual expenditures.

Government’s Response

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura refuted Kenyatta’s claims, stating that his office has been provided with 14 vehicles, and fueling and maintenance are handled by the State House. He dismissed allegations of blocked fuel cards, presenting records of recent fueling activities.

Conclusion

As the debate rages on, the contrasting narratives between Kenyatta and the government underscore the complexities of managing post-presidential benefits and the political undertones surrounding such matters. The exchange between Kenyatta and Koech reflects broader tensions within Kenya’s political landscape, highlighting the need for transparent and accountable governance.
