On the eve of the #OccupyCBDTuesday protests, Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) appeared notably tranquil, with a majority of businesses shuttered in preparation.
A check conducted by Citizen Digital observed serene conditions across CBD, where most establishments opted to close. This precautionary measure aimed to mitigate potential disruptions as activists geared up for a significant demonstration against the current administration.
Traffic flowed smoothly along major arteries such as Waiyaki Way, Mombasa Road, and Thika Road, facilitating normal commuting for residents. Despite the calm, a contingent of security forces cordoned off routes leading to State House, redirecting motorists onto alternative paths. This strategic move aimed to preemptively secure key government installations amidst the anticipated gathering of demonstrators.
Demonstrations Ignite in Migori with Vehement Opposition
Meanwhile, in Migori town, demonstrations commenced early in the day, causing widespread transport disruptions and prompting the closure of local businesses. In Kisumu, activist Boniface Akach confirmed plans for a march honoring those who lost their lives to police actions. Akach affirmed that demonstrators would converge at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sportsground before embarking on their protest. The event aimed to commemorate victims of police brutality and demand justice for their families.
President Ruto Addresses Security Measures Amidst Unrest
President William Ruto, speaking during a media briefing, assured the public that law enforcement would safeguard peaceful demonstrators while cracking down on opportunistic troublemakers masquerading as youth activists. He emphasized that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) remained on standby, prepared to intervene only if demonstrations escalated beyond control.
“The KDF will not patrol streets unless absolutely necessary. Our priority is to ensure peaceful protests are protected,” Ruto declared. His comments sought to reassure the public amidst concerns over potential clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement.
