Exhumation Details

During this phase, officials have exhumed over 30 graves, while DNA testing at the Malindi morgue in Kilifi County has positively identified 32 bodies. Families of the deceased may need to wait longer for DNA results due to the government’s decision to resume exhumations.

Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor assured that the investigation follows procedural guidelines with detailed autopsy reports.

Investigative Efforts

Last week, homicide detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) identified 50 graves near the areas where 429 bodies were previously exhumed. This area will be their main focus during the ongoing exercise.

Followers of Deadly Doctrine

Authorities believe the exhumed bodies belong to followers of Pastor Paul Mackenzie of Good News International Church in Kilifi County. Mackenzie faces accusations of inciting his followers to fast to death.

Mackenzie was arrested in April last year. He, along with his 94 co-accused, has been in custody, facing multiple charges, including murder, manslaughter, and child torture in the Shakahola case.

The exhumation exercise in Shakahola forest highlights the dire consequences of extreme religious doctrines. As authorities continue their investigation, the community and nation watch closely, hoping for justice and closure.
