Ruto Accuses Ford Foundation of Fomenting Violence in Kenya
President William Ruto
President William Ruto of Kenya has leveled serious accusations against the Ford Foundation, an American private foundation, alleging its involvement in sponsoring violent protests within the country.
Claims of Provocation and Chaos
Speaking passionately in Nakuru on Monday, Ruto directly implicated the Foundation in orchestrating disturbances during recent anti-government protests. He asserted that individuals hired by the Foundation instigated chaos, resulting in widespread property destruction and rampant looting of businesses.
Ruto’s Direct Challenge
Ruto posed a direct question to the Ford Foundation, demanding transparency regarding the funds allegedly used to incite violence. He firmly stated, “We are going to call them out and tell them to either support democracy or withdraw their disruptive activities.”
Denouncing Anarchy and Sponsorship
Expressing zero tolerance for unrest funded by external parties, Ruto vowed to identify and confront those financing disorder among Kenyan youth during otherwise peaceful demonstrations. “Those behind the chaos and violence will be exposed,” he affirmed.
Public Reiteration and Social Media Campaign
Shortly after his public address, President Ruto reiterated his accusations via social media, urging the Ford Foundation to clarify its involvement in the protests. He emphasized the youth’s unwillingness to engage in regressive acts and demanded accountability from the Foundation.
Criticism of Perpetrators
President Ruto previously criticized sponsors whom he accused of using hired individuals to undermine peaceful protests. He condemned the destruction of critical infrastructure, attributing it to what he termed as “criminal elements.”
The Ford Foundation: Origins and Operations
Established in 1963 by Edsel Ford, president of Ford Motor Company, the Ford Foundation initially focused on administering charitable funds for scientific and educational endeavors. Over the years, it has evolved into a significant humanitarian entity operating across 11 regions worldwide, including extensive involvement in Africa.
Philanthropic Footprint in East Africa
In East Africa, the Ford Foundation has partnered with countries like Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania to advocate for civic justice and support social justice activists. Since 2009, it has disbursed substantial funds, totaling over Ksh.138 billion ($10.7 million), to advance these causes.
