Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano  might become Kenya’s first female Attorney General if her appointment is approved by the parliarment. President William Ruto nominated her for the role on Friday. Miano will replace Justin Muturi, who served as the seventh Attorney General since Kenya’s independence. The list of previous Attorneys General includes Charles Njonjo (1963-1979), James Karugu (1980-1981), Joseph Kamere (1981-1983), Mathew Muli (1983-1991), Amos Wako (1991-2011), Professor Githu Muigai (2011-2018), and Kihara Kariuki (2018-2022).

New Responsibilities Await

In her anticipated role, Miano will formulate legal policies and oversee the administration of Kenya’s legal system. She previously held the position of Trade CS after a reshuffle in October 2023. The entire Cabinet faced dismissal last week. As Attorney General, Miano will need to navigate complex legal challenges and uphold the rule of law effectively.

A Record of Service

Before her role in the Cabinet, Miano served as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC. She broke new ground as the first female MD and CEO, leading the company for five years. During her tenure, she drove significant growth and innovation, transforming the company’s operations and impact in the energy sector.

Leadership and Advocacy

Miano established the Pink Energy forum to address gender issues within the energy sector. This forum worked to empower women and promote gender equality in an industry traditionally dominated by men. Additionally, she served as a council member of the World Bank Group’s Advisory Council on Gender and Development. Through these roles, Miano advanced initiatives that fostered regional cooperation and economic growth.

Her achievements earned Miano several awards. For instance, Women on Boards named her Chairperson of the Year in 2021. Moreover, she received the Company Secretary of the Year award in the Champions of Governance Awards series in 2010. Additionally, Miano earned the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW) and Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear. These honors recognize her significant contributions to public service and governance.

Educational Background and Professional Involvements

Miano holds a Bachelor of Law (LLB) Degree, a Diploma in Law, and completed post-graduate studies in Comparative Law. She actively contributes as a member of the Law Society of Kenya and has served on the Finance Committee of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK). Her education and professional experiences have equipped her with the expertise needed for the role of Attorney General.
