The National Elders Council has voiced its backing for the ongoing protests spearheaded by Generation Z across the nation. They have sharply criticized the government for its failure to address the needs of the populace.

Calls for Forensic Audit

Chairman Kungu Muigai, addressing reporters in Nairobi, demanded a thorough forensic audit in response to the country’s debt crisis. He emphasized the need to scrutinize government expenditure and revenue spanning the past 15 years.

“We need transparency in how public funds are managed. The claims of empty coffers must be substantiated through a detailed audit,” Muigai asserted.

Concerns Over Youth Unemployment

Muigai raised concerns about escalating youth unemployment, citing the government’s decision to halt public sector hiring, as announced by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u in the latest budget speech.

“Corruption lies at the heart of our unemployment crisis. Despite many youths holding multiple degrees, job opportunities remain scarce,” Muigai asserted.

Support for Dialogue

Despite their criticisms, the council of elders expressed support for President William Ruto’s call for dialogue amid escalating political tensions.

“We recognize President Ruto’s leadership and stand prepared to assist him in navigating these turbulent times,” Muigai affirmed.

National Unity and Stability

The council underscored the importance of national unity and stability, urging political leaders to prioritize the interests of the country above personal agendas.

“Our nation thrives when there is unity among its leaders. We call upon all political actors to set aside their differences and work towards the common good,” Muigai declared.

Addressing Grievances

In addition to their support for protests, the council highlighted the need for swift action to address grievances raised by the youth and other demonstrators.

“We urge the government to listen attentively to the voices on the streets. The concerns about economic inequality, corruption, and lack of opportunities must be addressed promptly,” Muigai urged.

Future Steps

Looking ahead, the council announced plans to engage with stakeholders across the country to find lasting solutions to the issues affecting Kenyan society.

“We will continue to engage with all relevant parties, including government officials, civil society, and the youth themselves, to chart a path forward that ensures a prosperous and inclusive future for all Kenyans,” Muigai concluded.
