Kieni Member of Parliament Njoroge Wainaina
Kieni Member of Parliament Njoroge Wainaina has revealed staggering financial losses amounting to over Ksh.550 million resulting from the recent anti-Finance Bill protests.
Losses Incurred and Impact
Wainaina disclosed that his supermarket in Kieni, Nyeri County, was completely destroyed during the protests on Tuesday. The destruction included Ksh.450 million worth of stock and approximately Ksh.100 million worth of bakery equipment, devastating both business operations and employment opportunities for his 350 employees.
Supporting the Finance Bill Despite Losses
Despite the monumental financial setback, Wainaina stood firm in his decision to support the Finance Bill. He emphasized that his constituents in Kieni, known for agricultural produce such as onions, potatoes, eggs, and milk, would have benefited from reduced competition if the bill had passed.
Allegations of Orchestrated Vandalism
The MP pointed fingers at alleged goons who infiltrated the protests under the guise of peaceful demonstrators. He accused them of orchestrating the vandalism and looting that led to the destruction of businesses like his supermarket.
Acknowledgment from Fellow MPs
Several MPs who also supported the Finance Bill acknowledged the repercussions they faced for their stance. Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi condemned the chaos that ensued after his Timber XO nightclub was similarly vandalized, highlighting the broader impact of the protests.
Public Outcry and Pressure on MPs
The public reaction to the Finance Bill and subsequent protests was intense, with widespread criticism directed at the 204 MPs who voted in favor of the bill. Social media platforms were inundated with posts expressing frustration over perceived disconnect between MPs and public opinion.
President Ruto’s Decision Amid Protests
As demonstrations continued and pressure mounted, President William Ruto ultimately chose not to sign the Finance Bill. His decision marked a significant shift in response to the public outcry and the widespread unrest triggered by the proposed legislation.
