MP Alleges Protesters Prioritized TikTok Views Over Tax Protests
Kitui South MP Rachel Nyamai stirred controversy in Parliament on Wednesday, June 19, alleging that some demonstrators protesting against punitive taxes in the proposed Finance Bill 2024 were primarily interested in gaining TikTok views rather than advocating against taxation measures. Nyamai made these remarks during the bill’s second reading debate.
Protesters’ TikTok Prioritization
Nyamai recounted an encounter with a girl she supports financially, participating in the protests. She questioned the girl’s motives, to which she admitted being there for TikTok views instead of protesting taxation issues.
MP Supports Bill Amendments
Expressing her support for the Finance Bill, Nyamai commended the committee’s proposed amendments. She believes these amendments have enhanced the bill’s acceptability, particularly regarding taxation on motor vehicles and bread.
Generation Z’s Call for Bill Withdrawal
Nyamai’s remarks came amidst widespread protests by Generation Z, demanding the complete withdrawal of the Finance Bill. They oppose the punitive taxes proposed in the bill, expressing concerns about its impact on the populace.

Debate on Economic Growth
During the parliamentary session, MP Junet raised doubts about the bill’s potential contribution to economic growth. He questioned whether the proposed measures would indeed stimulate the economy.
MP Calls for Respect of Protest Rights
Kathiani MP Robert Mbui took a firm stance against the bill, urging the Inspector General of Police to respect citizens’ right to protest. He emphasized the importance of allowing citizens to exercise their democratic rights without interference.
