Tragic Shooting Incident

Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome reassures judicial officers’ safety after the shooting of Magistrate Monica Kivuti.

Details of the Incident

Kivuti was fatally shot in the chest and pelvic area by Chief Inspector Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) of Londiani police station, during a court proceeding on June 13, 2024. Despite being rushed to Nairobi Hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.

Koome affirms the National Police Service’s commitment to providing full-time security for all judicial officers. He emphasizes that the police force will not waver in their duty to protect the judiciary.

Critical infrastructure protection units ensure security at court buildings and other vital government premises. “NPS Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) and the Security of Government Buildings (SGB) Unit continue to provide security to Court buildings among other critical infrastructure,” said Koome. “Police stations assign protective safety and security duties to all courts countrywide.”

Establishment of Judiciary Police Unit

The creation of the Judiciary Police Unit in 2021 enhances security for the Judiciary and its staff. This unit was established to provide dedicated protection to judicial officers and ensure their safety while performing their duties.
