In a bold decision, the government has announced its approval for the nationwide protests slated for tomorrow, Tuesday, June 25, opposing the Finance Bill 2024. Interior Security Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki affirmed on Monday that demonstrators can proceed under strict adherence to peace and legal standards.

Protests Against Finance Bill 2024 Gain Momentum

The protests, initiated last week, denounce the Finance Bill 2024 as draconian, warning of increased tax burdens on Kenyans. Demonstrators demand the complete withdrawal of the bill, rejecting government attempts at partial amendments.

Upholding Constitutional Rights Amidst Rising Tensions

Addressing the nation, Prof Kindiki reiterated the government’s commitment to uphold constitutional rights, emphasizing the right to peaceful assembly, demonstration, and petitioning authorities without arms. This stance comes amidst escalating tensions following reported fatalities linked to the protests.

Government’s Firm Conditions for Protesters

Kindiki issued stringent guidelines for demonstrators, emphasizing compliance with the law:

  1. Protesters must maintain peace and remain unarmed throughout all activities.
  2. Demonstrations should avoid inciting violence or promoting riots.
  3. Public order must not be disrupted under any circumstances.
  4. Non-protesting citizens should not face intimidation or inconvenience.
  5. Prior notification to the police about protest intentions and routes is mandatory for security purposes.
  6. Activities must cease by sunset or 6:30 PM, whichever is earlier, to ensure public safety.
  7. Law enforcement guidelines must be followed to prevent conflict and ensure protester safety.
  8. Destruction of public or private property is strictly prohibited and punishable by law.
  9. Transport services by road, rail, sea, or air must not be disrupted to maintain societal order.

Police Assure Neutrality in Law Enforcement

Prof Kindiki assured the public that security forces would maintain neutrality while enforcing the law. He emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of lawlessness, underscoring the importance of upholding public safety and order.

Balancing Rights and Responsibilities

As the nation braces for tomorrow’s protests, stakeholders are urged to prioritize adherence to legal frameworks and peaceful expression of dissent. The government’s decision to permit demonstrations underscores the significance of civic engagement while reinforcing the need for responsible conduct. With clear directives in place, the hope is for a peaceful resolution that respects both constitutional rights and national stability.

Exercise Rights Responsibly

Citizens are reminded of their right to protest peacefully, with the understanding that compliance with laws ensures the safety and well-being of all members of society.
