Former Vice President Rigati Gachagua strongly criticized President William Ruto’s “Forward Africa Summit,” calling it a diversionary tactic to address deep-seated problems in the country.
In a public address, Gachagua accused President Ruto of using the pretext of promoting African unity and development to “welcome African dictators.” The former vice president stated that the “Forward Africa Summit” was nothing more than a political show to enhance the government’s image, while ordinary Kenyans were suffering from inflation, unemployment, and insecurity.
Gachagua accused the Kenyan government of focusing too much on international propaganda while neglecting domestic issues affecting its people. He stated that the government should prioritize economic recovery, supporting farmers, empowering youth, and lowering the prices of necessities, rather than wasting resources on high-profile diplomatic meetings. The outspoken leader further criticized the questionable democratic records of some of the invited leaders in their own countries, stating that Kenya was damaging its reputation as a defender of democracy and human rights in Africa. He pointed out that true leadership should focus on transparency, accountability, and serving the people. His remarks sparked a new political debate across the country. President Ruto’s supporters called the summit a key platform for regional cooperation, trade, investment, and African solidarity. Government allies argued that hosting such international forums could enhance Kenya’s international standing and create economic opportunities through cooperation and foreign investment.
This meeting reflects the increasingly strained political relationship between Gachagua and President Ruto and foreshadows a tense political atmosphere in Kenya ahead of the upcoming national elections.
