Police have mounted a heavy security operation in London Estate, Nakuru West, following a worrying spike in violent crime along the Nakuru–Mogotio Road, particularly near the notorious Gioto Dumpsite.
The stretch, once busy with late-night motorists and early-morning commuters, has in recent days turned into a corridor of fear. Armed youths have allegedly been lying in wait, ambushing unsuspecting drivers, smashing windows, and making away with valuables under the cover of darkness.
Tension escalated sharply after a chilling attack on respected Nakuru surgeon Dr. Magare Gikenyi, who was accosted and robbed in the area while traveling along the road. The incident sent shockwaves through the community, prompting urgent calls for action from residents and local leaders who say the insecurity had been simmering for weeks.
In response, police launched a swift and coordinated crackdown, deploying officers to strategic points across London Estate and the Gioto Dumpsite corridor. Road patrols were intensified, foot patrols introduced, and several suspects were arrested during the operation. Authorities say the move is aimed at dismantling criminal networks believed to be operating from nearby informal settlements.
However, the arrests sparked unrest. Groups of youths took to the streets in protest, accusing police of harassment and indiscriminate targeting. For several hours, the area remained tense as officers worked to disperse the crowds and restore calm, with residents watching anxiously from their homes.
“This place had become a trap, especially at night,” said one boda boda rider who uses the Nakuru–Mogotio Road daily. “You never knew if you would reach home safely. The attack on the doctor just confirmed our worst fears.”
Local residents have welcomed the police presence but insist that lasting security will require more than patrols. They are calling for improved street lighting, youth employment programs, and closer collaboration between the community and security agencies to address the root causes of crime.
Police commanders have assured the public that the operation will continue until normalcy is fully restored. “We will not allow criminal gangs to terrorize residents and motorists,” an officer said, adding that more arrests are expected as investigations continue.
As night falls over London Estate, the flashing blue lights of patrol vehicles now signal a renewed push to reclaim the streets—but for many residents, the question remains whether the calm will last once the police eventually pull back.
