Deputy President Criticizes Political Opportunists

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sharply criticized certain politicians who sought to exploit recent anti-government protests for political advantage. Addressing the issue, Gachagua described these leaders as “idiots,” expressing his frustration over their attempts to use the protests to settle personal political disputes.

Speeches and Reactions at a Funeral

Gachagua made these remarks while attending the burial of Ms. Susan Kiiru in Ntrukuma village, Laikipia County. Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, along with three cabinet nominees—Soipan Tuya (Defence), Rebecca Miano (Tourism), and Alice Wahome (Lands)—accompanied him during the ceremony. The funeral was for the mother of Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau.

Criticism of Political Exploitation

During his speech, Gachagua denounced politicians who used the protests to advance their own agendas. He emphasized that their actions were both disappointing and opportunistic. “It is disheartening to see some leaders trying to benefit from this situation by targeting those they disagree with. Kenyans are perceptive; they understand what’s happening,” Gachagua stated.

Reflections on Recent Cabinet Appointments

On the subject of recent cabinet appointments, Gachagua urged the public to view them as a positive step toward national unity rather than as a contest of winners and losers. He reassured Kenyans that the appointments aim to foster cohesion and stabilize the country. “We should focus on how these appointments serve the nation rather than analyzing them through the lens of victory or defeat,” he said.

Unity and Recovery Emphasized

Gachagua called for national unity and reminded citizens of the need to heal and rebuild. He criticized those who had used the protests as an opportunity to commit crimes such as looting and vandalism. “Some people took advantage of the protests to steal and cause damage. These actions are unacceptable and only serve to harm our society,” Gachagua asserted.

Praise for Former Finance CS

The Deputy President also praised former Finance CS Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u, recognizing his efforts in reviving the country’s economy. Gachagua acknowledged the challenges Ndung’u faced and appreciated his dedication. “Prof. Ndung’u did an outstanding job at the National Treasury. We recognize his hard work and the progress made during his tenure. He can be proud of his achievements as he transitions to the new leadership,” Gachagua said.

Call for Peace from CS Mudavadi

In his address, CS Musalia Mudavadi echoed the call for peace and expressed deep concern over the impact of the protests. He highlighted the severe consequences, including loss of life and damage to businesses. Mudavadi urged citizens to reject violence and prioritize the well-being of the country. “The protests have caused significant suffering. Lives have been lost, businesses destroyed, and many people have been left in dire financial situations. It is crucial for us to uphold the law and show patriotism,” Mudavadi emphasized.

A Unified Appeal for Lawfulness

Both Gachagua and Mudavadi’s remarks underscore the urgent need for unity and lawful conduct in Kenya. Their speeches reflect a broader concern for national stability and recovery amid ongoing political and social challenges. They call upon all Kenyans to contribute positively to the nation’s progress and to avoid actions that could further destabilize the country.

Moving Forward Together

As Kenya navigates through this tumultuous period, the emphasis on unity, peace, and constructive engagement becomes increasingly vital. Gachagua and Mudavadi’s calls for harmony and respect for the rule of law highlight the need for collective efforts to restore normalcy and promote national cohesion. Their messages serve as a reminder of the importance of focusing on shared goals and working together for the country’s future.
