Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano might become Kenya’s first female Attorney General if her appointment is approved by the parliarment. President William Ruto nominated her for the role on Friday. Miano will replace Justin Muturi, who served as the seventh Attorney General since Kenya’s independence. The list of previous Attorneys General includes Charles Njonjo (1963-1979), James Karugu (1980-1981), Joseph Kamere (1981-1983), Mathew Muli (1983-1991), Amos Wako (1991-2011), Professor Githu Muigai (2011-2018), and Kihara Kariuki (2018-2022).
New Responsibilities Await
In her anticipated role, Miano will formulate legal policies and oversee the administration of Kenya’s legal system. She previously held the position of Trade CS after a reshuffle in October 2023. The entire Cabinet faced dismissal last week. As Attorney General, Miano will need to navigate complex legal challenges and uphold the rule of law effectively.

Before her role in the Cabinet, Miano served as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC. She broke new ground as the first female MD and CEO, leading the company for five years. Miano established the Pink Energy forum to address gender issues within the energy sector.
