MP Wamumbi Reveals Rift with Deputy President Gachagua
Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi revealed a deeper rift between President Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Speaking on Inooro TV, Wamumbi clarified that their disagreement had nothing to do with Gachagua’s war on illicit liquor. He stated that the rift emerged after Gachagua urged them to abandon the current leadership and regroup ahead of the 2027 general election.
Meeting at Gachagua’s Home
Wamumbi explained that despite their cordial relations, Gachagua’s advice was rejected during a meeting at his home. The meeting occurred on May 25, 2024, starting at 7:30 a.m. and ending at 3 p.m. “I was the only person he met that day. We talked for hours. I tried to tell him that his advisers were misleading him,” the MP explained. He added that he reminded Gachagua of his commitment to the Gikuyu people, accusing him of leading them down the wrong path.
Accusations of Betrayal
The MP accused Gachagua of being a turncoat, reneging on his agreement with Ruto ahead of the 2022 general elections. Wamumbi revealed that Gachagua first introduced him to President Ruto before the 2022 elections. He stated that Gachagua had a gentleman’s agreement with the President on how positions would be shared. “Gachagua told me he was not going to have a written agreement with President Ruto because he trusted him,” the MP said. He mentioned that Gachagua promised to present a list of seats to the President that would benefit the Central Kenya people after winning the election.
The List of Demands
After the elections, Gachagua approached President Ruto with a list of demands. This list resulted in key seats in Kenya’s power corridor. “The deputy president was seeking nine key seats that he believed would benefit the Central Kenyan people,” MP Wamumbi stated. The list included positions in Agriculture, Money, Security, Water, Lands, Public Service, Secretary to Cabinet, Central Bank Governor, and Attorney General.
Plea to Serve Under President Ruto
Wamumbi claimed he pleaded with DP Gachagua to serve under President Ruto instead of forming a 2027 political vehicle. He emphasized the importance of utilizing the 10 out of 26 cabinet positions already secured to benefit the Mt. Kenya region. “I begged him that we stay in government since we already have enough seats. We should work using what we have,” he added. Despite Gachagua’s significant role in his life, Wamumbi insisted that he has his own opinions on the country’s leadership.
