Parliament Speaker Moses Wetangula
Ultimatum Issued
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula issued a two-hour ultimatum on Tuesday demanding immediate information on the whereabouts of Gabriel Oguda. Oguda, a policy analyst working in the Minority leader’s office, was reportedly abducted in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Parliamentary Outcry
During parliamentary proceedings, Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi recounted receiving a distress call from Oguda at 2:30 am. Wandayi expressed frustration at his failed attempts to contact legal assistance due to phone jamming.
Calls for Action
Wandayi urged Speaker Wetangula to exert his authority to ensure the safe release of Oguda and other activists detained. He detailed the alleged intrusion into Oguda’s home and subsequent abduction, highlighting futile searches at Nairobi police stations.
Commitment from Majority Leader
In response, Majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah pledged to investigate with Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to confirm Oguda’s custody status. He emphasized equal treatment under the law for all, including MPs.
List of Abductions
Wandayi listed seven other individuals reportedly abducted in the past week, including Osama Otero, Drey Mwangi, Temper CR7, Harriet, France, Shad Khalif, and Wordsmith. He demanded transparency from IG Koome regarding their locations.
Continued Protests
Anti-Finance Bill demonstrations persisted into the second week, with youth taking to Nairobi’s streets in protest. The clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement escalated, particularly in the CBD.
The unfolding events underscore mounting tensions in Kenya’s political landscape, with allegations of police involvement in abductions fueling public outcry. Parliamentary leaders and activists alike are mobilizing to ensure accountability and justice amid ongoing civil unrest.
