Postmortem Findings from Kware Dumpsite: No Bullet Injuries
Government Chief Pathologist Johansen Oduor with Director of Homocide Martin Nyuguto
Chief government pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor revealed that the bodies recovered from the Kware dumpsite in Embakasi South had no gunshot wounds. This finding provides new insights into the mysterious deaths.
Collaboration with DCI
Dr. Oduor worked with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). They examined nine female bodies at the City Mortuary on Wednesday. These examinations uncovered disturbing details.
Disturbing Discoveries
The findings revealed missing lower limbs on some bodies. Additionally, other bodies had cuts at the lumbar area, mostly dismembered. Dr. Oduor explained, “Some bodies had lower limbs amputated from the knees downwards. We found two right legs and two left legs.” He added, “Three bodies were from the waist to the knee, and another trunk was from the waist upwards. We assigned the cause of death as strangulation.”
Severe Head Injuries
Dr. Oduor mentioned that some bodies had deep head injuries. These injuries likely caused severe bleeding. “We examined a whole female body and found head injuries,” he stated. This suggests the victims experienced brutal violence.
Identifying the Dismembered Parts
Dr. Oduor emphasized the challenge of identifying and assembling the dismembered parts. The team is taking DNA samples to reconcile each piece. He noted, “Severely decomposed bodies become difficult to assign a cause of death. Decomposition leads to postmortem artifacts, where many tissues get lost.”
No Gunshot Wounds
No bodies had gunshot wounds, which alleviated fears that they belonged to victims of anti-government protests. The protests, which started a month ago, saw many individuals shot dead. However, the absence of bullet injuries suggests a different cause of death.
Recoveries from Kware Dumpsite
The DCI reported that investigators recovered 13 female body parts from the Kware dumpsite between July 11 and July 15, 2024. These parts were in various stages of decomposition. Currently, the body parts are at the Nairobi Funeral Home, formerly City Mortuary. Families have identified at least two of the victims.
Prime Suspect Arrested
Authorities apprehended the prime suspect, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, 33, on July 15. The DCI used a phone trail to capture him. Initially, Khalusha confessed to killing 42 women since 2022. However, he later claimed he was tortured into confessing. This twist has complicated the investigation.
Additional Arrests
Authorities also arrested two more suspects, Amos Momanyi and Moses Ogembo. Investigators found Momanyi with a mobile phone and two Safaricom SIM cards belonging to one victim, Roselyn Akoth Ogongo. Ogembo allegedly sold the device to Momanyi. These arrests have provided more leads.
Court Grants Detention
On Wednesday, the court granted the DCI a request to detain the two suspects for 28 days. This period will allow the DCI to conclude their investigations. The case has attracted significant public attention, and many hope for a swift resolution.
