Kagame Secures Landslide Victory in Rwanda Election
Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame clinched a resounding victory in the recent election, solidifying his strong grip on power for another five years. The National Election Commission announced Kagame’s overwhelming win of 99.15 percent of the vote, with 79 percent of ballots counted.
Continuation of Dominance
Paul Kagame, effectively leading Rwanda since the genocide’s end in 1994 and serving as president since 2000, has extended his tenure with a record-breaking majority. His latest win surpasses his 98.79 percent from the 2017 election, leaving his two authorized opponents far behind.
Opposition Marginalized
Frank Habineza, leader of the Democratic Green Party, secured only 0.53 percent, while independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana received just 0.32 percent. The results highlight the minimal impact of opposition figures in Rwanda’s tightly controlled electoral landscape.
Expected Outcome
Critics anticipated Kagame’s victory, citing restrictions on opposition activities and the exclusion of prominent dissenting voices from the electoral process.
