DCI Appeals for Help in Anti-Tax Protest Lootings
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has reached out to the public for assistance in identifying suspects involved in looting businesses amidst anti-Finance Bill protests.
Surveillance Footage Reveals Looting
In a press release issued on Monday, the DCI revealed that its Imaging and Acoustic Unit, located at the National Forensic Laboratory, has gathered multiple CCTV recordings. These recordings capture individuals breaking into establishments and committing theft during what were supposed to be peaceful protests.
Urgent Arrests and Ongoing Threats
“While some perpetrators have been apprehended and presented in various courts today, others remain at large, poised to strike again,” stated the DCI. They urged citizens to come forward with information to identify suspects visible in the CCTV footage.
“We must root out these criminals from our midst as they undermine our core values. Our priority is to restore justice, particularly for those who have suffered devastating losses,” the DCI emphasized.
President Ruto’s Concerns and Actions
President Ruto voiced his concern about the widespread looting, highlighting reports that indicated organized groups had raided government premises, including attempts to access the parliament’s armoury and the mausoleum.
Bill Withdrawal Amidst Chaos
Following violent clashes that resulted in over 20 deaths and extensive damage to public property, President Ruto announced a surprising reversal in policy on Wednesday. He declared the withdrawal of the controversial 2024 finance bill, which had sparked the nationwide protests.
Evolution of Peaceful Protests to Chaos
Initially peaceful demonstrations erupted across the country in response to the passage of the finance bill by parliament. The protests, predominantly led by the younger generation, gained momentum unexpectedly, catching the government off guard.
Escalation to Violence
However, tensions escalated dramatically on Tuesday when police resorted to using live ammunition against demonstrators outside parliament. This action not only led to the ransacking and partial burning of the complex but also intensified public outrage.
Presidential Reversal and Engagement Proposal
“I acknowledge the people’s voice, and consequently, I will not endorse the 2024 finance bill. It will be formally withdrawn,” President Ruto announced in a press briefing.
“The youth have made their voices heard,” he affirmed.
“I intend to initiate dialogue with our young citizens, our sons and daughters, to actively listen to their concerns,” he added, signaling a significant shift from his earlier characterization of some protesters as criminals during a previous address.
