Shock in Maithairu Village
Residents of Maithairu in Kirinyaga are reeling after a 20-year-old woman committed a horrific act. She threw her two young children, aged three and four, into a nearby swamp, shocking the community.
The Scene Unfolds
A contractor had left a man-made marsh open, which wound through the village. According to Kirinyaga-West sub-county police commander Moses Koskei, Grace Wambui, 20, killed her children following a domestic dispute. The incident occurred near the swamp on land owned by Thomas Kabuci.
Community Response
Thomas Kabuci discovered Wambui and her children near the swamp. She expressed suicidal thoughts after being kicked out by her husband. Shocked villagers tried to intervene, offering assistance and trying to reason with Wambui.
Discovery and Alarm
Michael Mwangi, who was fishing nearby, witnessed the tragic event. He saw Wambui throwing her children into the water and immediately raised an alarm. Despite the distance, he rushed to the scene, but tragically, the children had already drowned by the time he reached them.
Rescue and Aftermath
Police from Kiandai police post arrived to calm the enraged crowd and rescue Wambui from further harm. Pastor Peter Munene, a family friend, arrived soon after. He highlighted ongoing domestic issues within the family and stressed the importance of mental health support.
Police Action and Investigation
Kirinyaga West sub-county police commander Moses Koskei confirmed that investigations are underway. Wambui, injured during the incident and subsequent altercation with villagers, received medical attention. She is now in custody at Baricho Police Station, awaiting legal proceedings. Meanwhile, the bodies of her children have been taken to Kerugoya mortuary for postmortem examinations to determine the cause of death.
