Tragedy Strikes: Six Firefighters Killed in South Africa
Fatal Blaze
Six firefighters tragically lost their lives in eastern South Africa due to a runaway wildfire, authorities confirmed on Monday. This incident brings the total death toll to 14 in recent fires across KwaZulu-Natal province.
Deadly Incident
On Sunday, three female firefighters were fatally trapped in a fire, suspected to be ignited by poachers, approximately 40 kilometers from Pietermaritzburg, the provincial capital. Three others succumbed to their injuries later in hospital, with one remaining in critical condition.
Poaching Link
Authorities suspect poachers initiated the blaze to flush out animals, exacerbating the wildfire’s intensity, according to uMngeni municipality mayor Chris Pappas.
Private Firefighting Efforts
The deceased firefighters belonged to a private team contracted by Sappi Forests for firefighting and forestry services. Sappi Forests attributed the tragedy to adverse weather conditions that contributed to uncontrollable fires.
Company’s Statement
“In the tragic events that ensued, three firefighters were unable to escape and suffered fatal wounds at the scene,” Sappi stated. Three others, critically burnt, were airlifted to hospitals but succumbed later.
Escalating Toll
The death toll now stands at 14 across various locations in KwaZulu-Natal since July 6. Authorities had previously warned about heightened fire risks due to dry, hot, and windy weather conditions.
