Former Chief Justice David Maraga to Lead Rwanda’s Election Observation Team
Former Chief Justice David Maraga of Kenya has been appointed by the East African Community (EAC) to spearhead the election observation mission in Rwanda.
Appointment Announcement in Kigali
In a press briefing held on Friday in Kigali, EAC Secretary-General Veronica Nduva officially announced Maraga’s pivotal role. She emphasized that Maraga will lead a team of 55 observers tasked with monitoring Rwanda’s presidential and parliamentary elections.
Scheduled Elections in Rwanda
Rwanda has scheduled its presidential election for July 15, 2024, followed by parliamentary elections on July 16, 2024.

Veronica Nduva stated, “It is my honor to announce that Chief Justice (emeritus) David Maraga of Kenya will lead the EAC election observation mission for the Rwanda general election 2024. The mission aims to ensure compliance with international and regional electoral standards.”
Objectives of the Observation Mission
Maraga affirmed, “Our mission is to assess the adherence to electoral processes and management, in accordance with international, regional, and national laws. We will also evaluate Rwanda’s commitment to democratic principles outlined in the EAC Treaty.”
