Medics Withdraw Services Amid Protests, Citing Safety Concerns
Medics for Kenya, an organization comprising health practitioners, have announced the withdrawal of their services during ongoing anti-tax protests in Kenya.
Initial Engagement and Service Setup
Members of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) initially joined the protests to provide emergency medical assistance. They established medical camps in Nairobi and other urban centers, equipped with ambulances for patient referrals.
Decision to Withdraw Services
Due to recent violence and the presence of unruly elements, Medics for Kenya has prioritized the safety of its volunteers. In a statement, the organization expressed regret over the decision to suspend medical camp operations nationwide.
Continued Coordination and Support
Dr. Austin Omondi, co-founder of Medics for Kenya, confirmed that their hotlines would remain operational. They will continue to coordinate with emergency responders and hospitals despite ceasing on-ground operations.
Location of Medical Camps
Previously, medical camps operated at strategic locations such as Jamia Mosque, All Saints Cathedral, and Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi, providing critical care to injured protesters.
Evolution of Protests into Violence
What began as a peaceful protest on June 11, 2024, has transformed into chaotic demonstrations marred by excessive police force.
Escalation of Conflict
Recent protests escalated into clashes between demonstrators and local business owners in cities like Nairobi and Mombasa. Business operators armed themselves to protect their properties from looters, reflecting heightened tensions.
Incidents of Confrontation
In Mombasa, the owner of Qaffee Point hotel fired shots at protesters, injuring two individuals. Similar incidents occurred in Nairobi, underscoring the volatile nature of the protests.
Criminal Exploitation Amid Chaos
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported incidents where opportunistic criminals took advantage of the protests to assault and rob innocent bystanders on major roads.
“DCI teams are actively pursuing gang members recorded violently robbing innocent Kenyans during these demonstrations,” stated the DCI, emphasizing their commitment to apprehend those involved in criminal activities.
Government Response and Accountability
Amid rising tensions, the government faces pressure to restore order and ensure accountability for the violence and criminal acts associated with the protests.
The withdrawal of medical services by Medics for Kenya highlights growing concerns over safety amidst escalating violence during anti-tax protests in Kenya. As authorities address the unrest and criminal activities, maintaining public safety and upholding the right to peaceful protest remain critical priorities.
