187 Protesters Arrested During Anti-Government Protests to Be Released on Bond – LSK
In a significant development following Tuesday’s anti-government protests, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) announced that they would release all 187 individuals, including minors, who the authorities had arrested on bond.
Legal Proceedings at Milimani Law Courts
LSK President Faith Odhiambo disclosed that the authorities had brought the detainees before the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday. The courts had filed various charges against them related to the protests.
Bond Conditions Set
The courts had granted each adult protester a bond of Ksh. 50,000. They will be able to secure release upon providing details of their families and relatives.
Special Arrangements for Minors
Odhiambo stated, “The courts granted each child arrested a personal bond of Ksh. 10,000.” The courts had ordered that they hold them separately at Capitol Hill police station until they identify their parents or guardians and provide the details as per the bond terms.
Police Instructions and Court Orders
The courts had directed the authorities to provide detailed information on all the individuals they arrested by 10 am to ensure they quickly process the release orders.
Protection for Vulnerable Children
Today’s court session will focus on ensuring the protection and welfare of orphaned street children among the detainees, considering their vulnerable status.
Violence Erupts in Peaceful Protests
The demonstrations, initially peaceful, had turned violent when suspected thugs infiltrated the march along Tom Mboya Avenue in the capital city, causing extensive property damage.
Protesters Plan Continued Demonstrations
Despite the recent unrest, activists have announced plans to continue protests today, underscoring ongoing dissatisfaction with the government’s policies and actions.
Public Reaction and Government Response
The arrests and subsequent legal proceedings have sparked mixed reactions among the public. Critics argue that the arrests infringe on the right to peaceful assembly and expression, while government officials maintain that they are necessary to uphold law and order.
LSK’s Role and Advocacy
The Law Society of Kenya has been actively involved in advocating for the rights of the protesters and ensuring that legal processes follow the law. They continue to monitor developments closely to safeguard the rights of those involved.
Future Legal Proceedings
Moving forward, the focus will be on the outcomes of today’s court session and how the legal system addresses the concerns raised during these turbulent times.
