In a late-night Senate session, Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza was impeached. Senators, mainly from the Kenya Kwanza coalition, voted to uphold all charges against the Governor. The session, marked by heated exchanges and tense moments, culminated in her removal from office.

Mwangaza faced three charges. The first charge was a gross violation of the Constitution and other laws. The Senate found her guilty, with 26 Senators voting in favor, 4 opposing, and 14 abstaining. The second charge, similar in nature, resulted in 26 votes for, 2 against, and 14 abstentions. On the final charge of abuse of office, 27 Senators voted to confirm the accusation, with 1 opposing and 14 abstaining.

Senate Removes Mwangaza from Office

Speaker Amason Kingi, after the voting, delivered a firm ruling. “The Senate has resolved to remove from office by impeachment Hon. Kawira Mwangaza, the Governor of Meru County, and the Governor accordingly ceases to hold office,” he declared.

This moment signaled a significant political shift in Meru County. It marked the end of Kawira Mwangaza’s controversial tenure. Despite facing multiple attempts to impeach her, this third effort proved successful. Mwangaza had hoped to survive, but the government rallied enough support to ensure her ouster.

Drama Unfolds in the Senate Chambers

The session wasn’t without its share of drama. Before the voting, Senators had gathered for a closed-door meeting. When they reemerged, tensions were high, and emotions flared. Heated exchanges erupted between lawmakers, who engaged in shouting matches over procedural issues.

Majority Whip Bonnie Khalwale, among the few who did not support Mwangaza’s removal, made a passionate plea to the Speaker. He requested that the Speaker address certain procedural questions before moving forward. Khalwale referenced historical parliamentary figures, including Martin Shikuku, Jean Marie Seroney, Chelagat Mutai, and JM Kariuki, to emphasize his point.

“I am reflecting on the history of Parliament. If Martin Shikuku were alive, Jean Marie Seroney, Chelagat Mutai, JM Kariuki—they would have wanted the Speaker to settle the important issue of matters in this case that are actively before the courts because they are sub judice,” Khalwale argued.

Speaker Rules Khalwale Out of Order

Despite Khalwale’s impassioned argument, Speaker Amason Kingi remained unmoved. He ruled Khalwale out of order and threatened to eject him from the chamber if he continued. “Don’t push me into throwing you out; take your seat,” Kingi sternly ordered.

The tension in the room heightened as the Speaker gave his instructions. Khalwale, clearly frustrated, eventually relented and took his seat. However, the confrontations were far from over.

Female Senators Protest Treatment of Colleague

More drama ensued when Speaker Kingi ordered the Sergeant-at-Arms to remove Nominated Senator Beth Syongo from the chamber. This sparked a fierce reaction from female Senators. They erupted in protest, accusing the Senate staff of harassing their colleague.

Several female lawmakers began wailing, demanding fair treatment for Syongo. They claimed the orderlies’ actions amounted to intimidation. The protests caused a brief disruption in the proceedings. Eventually, calm was restored, but the incident left an indelible mark on the session.

Mwangaza’s Short, Turbulent Tenure Comes to an End

Mwangaza’s time as Meru Governor has been anything but smooth. Since taking office, she faced repeated efforts to remove her. This third impeachment proved fatal for her political career—at least for now. However, it appears that Mwangaza is not giving up her fight just yet.

Many expect that she will take her case to the courts, seeking legal recourse in hopes of reversing her impeachment. Whether she succeeds remains to be seen, but her political journey is far from over.

Public Divided Over Mwangaza’s Impeachment

The news of Mwangaza’s impeachment has sparked mixed reactions among the public. Some residents of Meru County expressed relief at her removal. They argued that she had failed to deliver on her promises and had caused unnecessary political instability in the region.

However, Mwangaza still commands a significant following. Her supporters insist that she has been unfairly targeted by her political opponents. They claim that the impeachment process was politically motivated and aimed at silencing her independent voice.

What’s Next for Meru County?

With Mwangaza removed from office, Meru County now faces uncertainty. The Senate’s decision leaves a power vacuum that must be filled promptly. According to the law, Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu is expected to assume the role of Governor in the interim. Ntuchiu, a seasoned politician, now shoulders the responsibility of leading Meru through this transitional period.

Residents of Meru will be closely watching how the county’s leadership navigates this change. Ntuchiu has promised to prioritize stability and continuity, ensuring that county projects and services remain uninterrupted during this time of transition.

Legal Battles Looming for Mwangaza

Though she has lost her position as Governor, Kawira Mwangaza seems determined to continue her fight. Legal experts predict that she will challenge her impeachment in court. Mwangaza’s legal team has already hinted at filing an appeal, arguing that the Senate’s decision was unfair and procedurally flawed.

If she proceeds with the legal battle, it could take months to resolve. In the meantime, Meru County will have to move forward without her at the helm.

Political Analysts Weigh In

Political analysts across Kenya have weighed in on Mwangaza’s impeachment. Many see her removal as a sign of the growing power of the Kenya Kwanza coalition. They argue that the coalition’s influence is expanding, even in regions where it previously had limited control.

Others believe that Mwangaza’s impeachment signals a broader trend of heightened political tensions in Kenya. As the country approaches the next general elections, political divisions are likely to deepen, and more leaders could face similar challenges.

Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment has left Meru County at a crossroads. The Senate’s decision to remove her from office has sparked political and legal uncertainty. As the county prepares for new leadership, Mwangaza seems ready to continue her fight in court. Her future remains unclear, but one thing is certain—Kenya’s political landscape remains as unpredictable as ever.

In the coming weeks, all eyes will be on Meru as the county adjusts to life without Mwangaza at the helm. How the new leadership handles this transition will shape the future of the region and could have broader implications for Kenya’s political dynamics.
